Gucci lipstick - Worth the £34 price tag?
[Picture above: Lipsticks in order L-R *Sheer Lipstick/ Satin Intense Colour/ Lip Balm]
I’m such a Gucci whore, that when I heard about their beauty products, I wanted it all! In the UK, they only sell the lipsticks and the fragrances, but I believe an entire makeup line is available in the US. This is something for me to investigate (I smell a BIG haul!) next time I’m in the States.
For now, I settled for the lipsticks only, but my gosh…HOW NICE?! They’re £34 per lipstick and you get three varieties; the Luminous Sheer Lipstick, Satin Lipstick with Intense Colour and Lip Balm. All three varieties have choice of shades and three different designs of desirable packaging.
The Sheer Lipsticks live in a glamorous gold Art Deco-esque case, the Satin Intense Colour in a pretty floral case and the Balm in a chic turquoise case. All three bullets are quite heavy, making it feel luxurious, and of course, with the signature gold Gucci label on top of the lipstick case.
There are 17 shades in the Luminous Sheer range, 34 in the Satin Intense and 3 in the lip balm. When I browsed Harrods, all the shades were not available and it is only when I went online, that I realised there were so many choices. It’s quite a shame that Harrods don’t stock (or least display all shades available) because they are paying for the floor space anyway, and as far as I’m aware, they’re the only UK store to sell Gucci beauty products (except online of course).
I am impressed by their initial launch and choice of lipstick shades, but I feel that they should have created a matte lipstick collection. Maybe that’s next on their agenda? Though all three lip collections are very pretty, they all have a sheen/ shiny finish. Since a lot of people prefer matte, that is already limiting their audience and potential customers.
The Sheer lip colour is literally as the name suggests, with a sheer wash of colour. I purchased the colour ‘Hold Your Man’ which is a pretty peachy nude, perfect for everyday wear. I got ‘Constance’ in the Satin Intense Colour which is a pinky red, and since it has a satin finish, it’s an easier red to wear for those wanting to try a bolder colour. Though I have a million reds, I would have bought a lipstick even in the colour of poop simply because the packaging is so beautiful!
Finally, I got ‘No More Orchids’ in the lip balm. The lip balm collection features two colours, and a plain lip balm. I would say £34 is too much for just a lip balm (which it is!) but then again, La Mer’s one sells for £52… enough said! I would describe ‘No More Orchids’ as a sheer neon pink lip colour. Again, the sheer finish and sheen finish makes it easier to wear for those who want to venture into brighter coloured lipsticks.
Some may say it’s not worth the £34 price tag but, since competition is so rife these days, you’ve either got to invent a completely new and innovative colour (very difficult!) or deliver sickening(ly good) packaging. Gucci delivers the latter. I think the lipsticks ARE worth the price tag as they’re high quality, and offer a wide variety of shades to choose from. The names are quirky, and you can tell some thought has gone into it unlike most brands these days naming their reds “crimson…” or “flaming…” something or another, and nudey pinks “bae…” this and that. Needless to say, the packaging itself is gorgeous and would make any woman proud when taking it out of their handbag.
Next on my Gucci beauty hit-list, are the Gucci Alchemist fragrances!
Until next time xo
